My Adapted Prayer for My Daughter

I finished Tina Fey's Bossypants this weekend. I loved every minute of it. Poor Joe had to put up with me laughing and then reading him a page of text about every five minutes. The novel included a chapter entitled, "A Mother's Prayer for Her Daughter". I think that it is amazing. I have included the chapter here with my own additions in brackets.

"First, Lord: No tattoos. May neither Chinese symbol for truth nor Winnie-the-Pooh holding the [JMU] logo stain her tender haunches.

May she be Beautiful but not Damaged, for it’s the Damage that draws the creepy soccer coach’s eye, not the Beauty [and damage only comes with catastrophe and that is something that I wish her to never know].

When the Crystal Meth is offered, may she remember the parents who cut her grapes in half and stick with Beer [light beer, and only in college].

Guide her, protect her when [doing anything in the dark], crossing the street, stepping onto boats, swimming in the ocean, swimming in pools, walking near pools, standing on the subway platform, [talking to rednecks], stepping off of boats, using mall restrooms, getting on and off escalators, driving on country roads while arguing, leaning on large windows, walking in parking lots, riding Ferris wheels, roller-coasters, log flumes, anything called “Hell Drop,” “Tower of Torture,” or [haunted houses], and standing on any kind of balcony ever, anywhere, at any age.

Lead her away from Acting but not all the way to Finance. Something where she can make her own hours but still feel intellectually fulfilled and get outside sometimes and not have to wear high heels. [Allow her to love her job so much that it feels like a blessing to get up in the morning instead of a burden].

May she play the Drums to the fiery rhythm of her Own Heart with the sinewy strength of her Own Arms, so she need Not Lie With Drummers [or at least let that phase be short and full of fun stories and not heartbreak, because really... we all have that phase].

Grant her a Rough Patch from twelve to seventeen. Let her draw horses and be interested in Barbies for much too long, For childhood is short – a Tiger Flower blooming Magenta for one day – And adulthood is long and dry-humping in cars will wait.

O Lord, break the Internet forever, That she may be spared the misspelled invective of her peers and the online marketing campaign for [anything that doesn't involve turning a classic novel into a crappy movie].

And when she one day turns on me and calls me a Bitch in front of Hollister, Give me the strength, Lord, to yank her directly into a cab in front of her friends, For I will not have that Shit. I will not have it.

And should she choose to be a Mother one day, be my eyes, Lord, that I may see her, lying on a blanket on the floor at 4:50 A.M., all-at-once exhausted, bored, and in love with the little creature whose poop is leaking up its back.

“My mother did this for me once,” she will realize as she cleans feces off her baby’s neck. “My mother did this for me.” And the delayed gratitude will wash over her as it does each generation and she will make a Mental Note to call me. And she will forget. But I’ll know, because I peeped it with Your God eyes.

Amen."

I hope you have enjoyed being in Joe's shoes for a moment and "listening to me read" my favorite section of the book that made me laugh, think, and become nostalgic for something that has yet to occur.

The "Bump" is a Bit Large Now

This weekend we were visited by two wonderful people, Amanda and Sean Casey. We only get to see them about once a year (mainly because Joe and I are bad friends/I never answer the phone/we have never even seen their house), but when we do get to see them it is always a fun time.

While we were waiting for the two of them to arrive, after the Va Tech graduation, Joe and I decided to snap some picks of the growing thing that is my abdomen.

There is no way to deny that I am pregnant. Some of my students waited until about a month ago to ask if I was expecting and the rest of the class made fun of them... "no unnamed student, I just ate A LOT of cheez-its at lunch".

Well, hey there!

Another fun thing that has happened this week is the arrival of the new cushions for the rocking chair. This rocking chair came from Joe's mom and was used to rock all of the Loyacano/Barbagallo clan.

I had no idea that I had a thing for owls until I started putting this room together, but in my defense Joe helped a lot when picking out the pattern.

My Almost-a-Mother's Day

I really didn't know what to do with Mother's Day this year (other than celebrate my own Mom), but those closest to me decided to include me in the "mom" category. My mom gave me a Willow Tree figurine of a pregnant woman. It is adorable and, other than the fact that there is no way I would look that tall in wooden figurine form, it looks like me. Joe decided to give me something to help me relax and make me smile, so he gifted me the kindle book Bossypants. I really hope I am able to read this book before August, because I love Tina Fey and would really enjoy reading the book in one sitting and not over 6 months with many, many distractions.

My parents came down this weekend to look at houses. Even though they did not find a house that they wanted to put an offer in on right away it gave us a chance to spend some time together. By the way, Joe and I are super excited to have family moving down to our area. Life is going to be way easier with the help that they will provide.

My mom and I decided to spend our Sunday partaking in the female ritual know as the mani-pedi. We thought that getting our nails done would be the best way to celebrate Mother's Day together.

Here we are enjoying our pampering:

Look at the belly... goodness.

What I Wish I Was Doing

I don't know whether it is the weather that cannot decide what it is doing, or the fact that my sleeping schedule is all messed up from Spring Break a few weeks ago, but I am tired. I am sure this whole being pregnant thing may have something to do with being sleepy, but I can't give the little gal all of the credit. So, here is a picture of what I wish I were doing right now...

My belly doesn't look as perfectly pregnant when horizontal, but people have been asking for pictures of me...so here you go. Joe and I have not begun to start freaking out yet, which is probably a good sign. Hopefully, we will look this relaxed in August.

Starting to Decorate

So, I love looking at Etsy for crafting ideas. I found one individual who makes pieces of art by layering paper. I stole that idea and made it my own. I painted each canvas in a lavender color that I thought would compliment the green in the room. I also purchased a set of patterned card stock. I will not bore you with the process but it involved a lot of drawing, cutting, and resizing. I am trying to make the room age appropriate, but also able to grow along with her over the years.

Turtle
Owls
Elephant and Bird
I think the nature theme is coming together.

The Benefit of Knowing Great People

My Spring Break was last week and all I could think about was getting the baby's room painted. I knew that I wanted to get the room painted, but I also didn't want to stress out Joe (this is the busy time in his semester). So, I asked two friends from school if they would come over and help me paint while Joe was teaching. They were amazing. The two of them came over around 10am and left by 2pm with the room completely painted and in great shape. All I had to do was supervise and make lunch which was a pretty sweet deal.
Joe and I chose a bright, happy green for the room. Katie and Dalton have amazing team work skills.
Katie took on the job of painting while Dalton was the designated tape master.
Even though Dalton was forced into manual labor over his break he still had a smile on his face.
Here is a look at the room color against the dark furniture we purchased.

Joe and I have decided on a natural theme for the baby's room. Our hope is to have trees up on the wall shortly.

First Glimpse at the New Loyacano

I have not been very good about updating facebook (or the world) about the little one on the way. I am in my 25th week, but these sonogram photos were taken during my 22nd week. We were able to spend a good deal of time in the sonogram room with the technician and she pointed out all of amazing, and healthy, parts of our new baby girl. Here are just a few images:
This little girl is already a stunner. Just look at that cute little nose.
A wider shot.
Baby feet are even cute when in blurry sonogram form.

My goal is to keep this blog updated with the happenings in the Loyacano household. I know that a lot of my friends and family do not live close enough to regularly receive updates, so hopefully this will help to keep everyone in the loop.
